Streetlight Project Update
By: Ray Estep & Jeremy Vice
For many years, we have taken streetlights for granted until the lamp burned out or the color of the replacement bulb no longer matched. As many of you know, Riverchase was developed by the Harbert Equitable Joint Venture (HEJV) with the goal of preserving the natural look around homes and townhome communities. Excluding above-ground power and poles was part of this vision, creating a clean, scenic environment that residents have come to love.
There were no streetlights until the RRA Board recognized a safety concern 20-25 years ago, investing ~$200k in a streetlight project. Our concrete poles are built to last, but the old bulbs are being phased out. Alabama Power Company (APC) has managed maintenance, with the RRA covering bulb costs. However, LED is now the best option and will soon be the only choice.
Earlier this year, the RRA Board learned that switching to LED might require replacing lamps, fixtures, and poles, potentially costing $200-300k. Recent technology advancements, however, may provide better alternatives for Riverchase. Many neighborhoods across the state are dealing with similar issues and exploring options as well, which gives us hope for more cost-effective solutions.
Riverchase has 249 streetlights with acorn-style globes that can be retrofitted with LED fixtures. The Board is evaluating two options from APC, which may lead to a modest increase in monthly payments but would allow us to upgrade all streetlights to LED, ensuring Riverchase stays well-lit for years to come. Stay tuned for further updates!
Update February 6, 2025:
Work to Begin on Streetlight Replacement- Be Alert!!
Watch for work trucks and traffic cones! Alabama Power has scheduled the first phase of the new LED streetlight installation (50-60 lights) to begin the week of February 10th. The existing concrete poles will remain, but everything at the top of the poles will be replaced. Work will begin on Riverchase Parkway West at Highway 31 and continue into the community along the Parkway. 2nd Phase should begin the week of March 10th, weather permitting. The new LED lights are identical to the two new ones installed in the Fairways two years ago.
