You might think this the beginning of an energized horse race, except for that odd fourth line! And you would be right about it being a race, and about it being… well… energized… to a point. But horses? No. 

This is a Red-Footed Tortoise race! And they are being held on the 2nd Monday of the month from 7:00-7:45 PM at the Country Club. Stay for all 5 races. Everyone in Riverchase is invited. 

But let’s back up and find out how this all happened!

When Club manager, Don McDougall (personal communication, June 15, 2026), mulled over how best to celebrate the Country Club’s 50th anniversary, tortoises did not immediately come to mind. However, as he considered the last fifty years and looked forward to another fifty, these docile reptiles seemed a fitting tribute.

Their life expectancy could reach 50 years, another possible celebratory marker for the club. They were domesticated, gentle around children, acclimated to the Alabama weather, and low maintenance. To avoid being overrun with these hard-shelled beauties, Don ordered only six 2 – 3-year-old males.

In the two months since their arrival, they have settled into their sanctuary on the edge of the lake approaching the 1st tee. Don says they spend about 80% of their time in their house (he has ordered a second one). 

He says they are all friendly and most of them will stick their heads out for a gentle pat. “You are welcome,” he says, “to come visit them anytime, pet them, and feed them. But please treat them and their sanctuary with respect.”

And always wash your hands after touching them! They can carry salmonella.

 

Now back to the races! 

Before the first bugle call a circle is taped on the grass. The tortoises are placed inside with a box over them. The bugler makes the call to post, the tortoises uncovered, and there is a frantic-less rush to be the first outside the circle. Accolades to the winner!!
